Bijoy vs Unicode: how to type Bangla that works everywhere
Bangla text that looks fine on one computer can turn into gibberish on another. The difference between Bijoy and Unicode, and how to keep your Bangla portable.

If you have opened a Bangla document and seen a jumble of English letters and symbols, you have met the difference between legacy Bangla encodings and Unicode. It still causes daily trouble in offices, schools and print shops. Here is what is going on and how to avoid it.
Two ways to store Bangla text
A computer stores text as numbers. Unicode is the international standard that gives every character in every major script its own number. Bangla has its own block in Unicode, so অ, ক and া-কার are stored as Bangla characters whichever font or device shows them.
Before Unicode was widely supported, Bangla was often typed with Bijoy and similar systems that used special fonts. These are called legacy or ANSI encodings. They store Latin character codes and rely on a matching font, such as SutonnyMJ, to draw them as Bangla shapes. Without that font, the text shows as Latin letters and symbols.
Why legacy text breaks
- It depends on one font. Send the file to someone without it and the Bangla disappears.
- Search engines and phones cannot read it as Bangla, so it does not show up in search.
- Copying it into a website, email or social post usually produces gibberish.
- Spell checkers, screen readers and translation tools cannot work with it.
Why Unicode is the better choice
Unicode Bangla works in browsers, phones, email and modern office software without special fonts. It can be searched, copied and read aloud by screen readers. For anything published online, it is the only form search engines can index properly.
How to type in Unicode
- Use a Unicode keyboard. Avro Keyboard offers phonetic and fixed layouts, and newer versions of Bijoy can also type Unicode.
- On phones, Gboard and other common keyboards type Bangla in Unicode.
- Choose Unicode fonts such as Noto Sans Bengali, Hind Siliguri, Kalpurush or SolaimanLipi.
- To check a file, copy a word into a browser's search bar. If it still reads as Bangla, it is Unicode.
Converting old documents
Free converters can turn Bijoy text into Unicode and back. Always proofread the result: conjuncts and vowel signs sometimes come out in the wrong order, especially in older files typed with workarounds.
A note on কার and conjuncts
In Unicode, a vowel sign such as ি-কার is stored after its consonant even though it is drawn before it. The font and the system's text shaping put it in the right place. A conjunct such as ক্ষ is stored as ক, the hasanta (্) and ষ. Because shaping happens automatically, the stored text stays clean and searchable.
